Heart won?t go on in Kerry

CELINE Dion better watch out. The royalty cheques from Kerry could be slowing down to a trickle in the new year. It emerged this week that the days of having My Heart Will Go On from the organ loft as the bride makes her way up the aisle, might be numbered.

Director of Sacred Music for the Kerry Diocese Padraig McIntyre wants to put an end to the idea of singing pop songs during wedding ceremonies in the church. Having recently attended a wedding where one of the readings was from a fairytale and one of the songs was the theme tune to Titanic, he has decided that enough is enough.

?Songs from the shows, musicals and pop charts do a disservice to the celebration,? he writes in the new edition of the Kerry Diocesan magazine, ?Lumen?.

?Of course songs like Wind Beneath My Wings, Perhaps Love and Have I Told You Lately are great songs, but they are more suitable for the reception.?

Mr McIntyre believes that there might be a basic lack of understanding out there of the symbolism and role of music in the wedding ceremony. To this end, he has prepared ?Guidelines for music in the rite of marriage? which will be available to Kerry couples in the spring. But in the meantime, if you?re determined to incorporate a Van Morrison favourite into proceedings on your big day, then start sweet-talking your local PP.
